History

The Janet L. Johnson Freshman Excellence Award was created by the D. I. V. A., Inc. members of NACUM to honor one of the most beloved faculty members in the Department of Theatre Arts at Howard University. “Ms. Janet” as she is affectionately known, has been the anchor of the department for more than 30 years. Her care and concern for Freshman is unparalleled! We honor her legacy in creating this award.

Objective

Highlight an outstanding Freshman at the end of the school year by presenting them with a $300 award to be used towards their artistic journey.

Award Requirements

  • GPA of 3.0 for the Fall/Spring semesters
  • Leadership in the Department of Theatre Arts 
  • Community Engagement
  • Applicants must write a 500- word essay on, “What is your 5-year plan upon graduation?” (Inclusive of artistic goals leading up to graduation)
  • 1 letter of recommendation from a faculty member

Application Details

The application process begins February 1st and closes April 11th of the spring semester. The award recipient will be announced at the Owen Dodson “Weenie” Awards Ceremony in May.
